A huge news story is being made of the fill-in nurse (because of the nurses' strike) who made a medication mistake, and the patient died. Yes, this is a tragedy, when someone dies from a medical mistake, but THIS IS NOT NEWS.
People die from medical care, some "mistakes" and some "properly administered," every day. Some years ago, at the National Press Club, David Lawrence, M.D., then CEO of Kaiser Permanente, said that Medicine is the third leading cause of death, after heart disease and cancer. He put the death toll, in this country alone, at 400,000 a year. That's 1,096 people a day, which is like three jumbo jets falling out of the sky and killing everyone... every day.
Yet people continue to trust their doctor, their specialist, their tests, their procedures, their drugs, their diagnosis. Why? The really crazy thing is that most fail to look elsewhere, like to real health care (Medicine is, in reality, disease care)... Chiropractic.
Some years ago, there were doctors' strikes in Israel and in France. Guess what happened? THE DEATH RATE WENT DOWN!!!
Time to rethink things?
